Mojang Studios, the Microsoft-owned developer behind the wildly successful procedurally generated Sandbox game “Minecraft,” announced Wednesday that NFTs and other blockchain products will not be supported by the studio or permitted in the game.
As a form of blockchain technology an NFT or non-fungible token is basically an unique receipt linked to the blockchain for any digital asset – like an illustration, a video or character model in a video game or any other digital asset you can access through a computer that confirms the holder as the one true owner of the asset. If a player from “Minecraft” was able to use the NFT for a pickax that resembles the lightsaber, they could claim to be the legal owner of the original pickax with the lightsaber.
In its statement, Mojang explained that NFTs interfere with the values of collaboration and cooperation because virtual assets are by their nature extremely rare collector’s items.
“NFTs are not inclusive of all of our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots,” the statement reads.

Mojang also stated that the mental state NFTs introduce into “Minecraft” would tarnish players’ long-term enjoyment the game. Mojang expressed concern that players would spend more time analyzing NFTs values and trying to earn money through “Minecraft” rather than playing the game itself.
The statement also outlined other issues Mojang had with NFTs around quality control, instances of fraud, and NFTs sold at artificially inflated values. However, the restriction on NFTs was a conditional; Mojang said it would be paying “close attention” to how the technology evolves. The statement says that blockchain technologies aren’t allowed to be integrated into Minecraft client or server applications and cannot be utilized to create NFTs from any in-game content like skins and worlds, persona items as well as other mods. “We are not planning on using blockchain technology in Minecraft right now.”
This is a bold position for a title like “Minecraft” in particular when it has sold 238 million copies, according to Statista. “Minecraft”, the most-sold video game ever, is the most popular videogame ever. The appeal is clear: “Minecraft” is simple and easy to use, as well as enormously flexible. Players have used “Minecraft” to make an Harry Potter game set in an exact replica of Hogwarts and created a fictional cult commune dedicated to the streamer MoonMoon and even made an actual CPU.

Due to their customizable nature and their popularity with younger gamers, “Roblox” is often mentioned in the same breath as “Minecraft”. Roblox Corporation has not yet officially endorsed NFTs, but Chief Business Officer Craig Donato expressed enthusiasm for their inclusion in the game during an interview with VentureBeat. lion is the king of the jungle
A recent study revealed that private NFT and blockchain gaming companies raised more than $2.2 billion in the first half of 2022. This is an indication of the interest of investors in the video game industry. Lee Trink, CEO and founder of the lifestyle and gaming brand FaZe Clan spoke glowingly Wednesday about the company’s potential to explore possibilities related to blockchain tech.
However, NFTs are also viewed as a skepticism by many developers. According to Bloomberg Ubisoft’s first foray into NFTs was criticised by its employees. Frost Giant Studios co-founder Tim Morten described play-to-earn blockchain games as “dangerously close to an elaborate pyramid scheme” in an interview with Wired. A company with the stature of Mojang referring to NFTs as harmful to their brand and game might give some prospective investors pause.
