Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight spots.
If you are looking for a smooth ride on your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that can swivel. However, they are prone to punctures so be prepared with a repair kit.
Sturdy frame
New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies, the symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, and are more versatile and easier to drive while still looking fashionable.
The larger the wheels are, the better your buggy will cope with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. Having larger wheels both front and back makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on rough terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on an infant and a toddler and found it extremely durable. It was able to withstand cobbles, grass, and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said “it is solid to push and is very stable when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require occasional pumping) come with suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my children.
Another thing to think about is the seat size and shape. It should be large enough for your child’s comfort and you will also need it to recline to allow them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which allows the child to face you, while other buggies only permit a parent-facing option.
The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or wet walks. This buggy can be used as a one-person unit from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers from age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and large padded seat unit. Storage options are also great with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and an extra pouch at the rear of seat unit.
Wheels with a larger diameter
Larger wheels means that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also allow you to maneuver the buggy through tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with rotating front wheels that help you navigate around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be driven. This is also useful if you hit a tree or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres, which means they can handle a variety of terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they’re prone to punctures so you’ll need to have a repair kit, spare tube, and pump on hand.
Our top 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, “perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles” and are able to effortlessly go up and down kerbs. They also have suspension that Kath says “smooths out bumps extremely effectively”.
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite large, and may struggle to fit into tight spaces. This could be problematic if you intend to use it as a jogger, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow while out and about. Luckily, most models have compact folding options that let you remove the front wheels to create more compact storage.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeler can be easier to maneuver with children. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels be turned on a dime and are easy to maneuver, making them perfect for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her toddler and newborn and stated: “The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground with the swivel rear wheel being particularly helpful. I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. I found it extremely steady when I was driving downhill or over uneven terrain.”
The only drawback of this incredible mobility is that the 3 wheel buggy’s larger wheels do sometimes mean it has to be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces – something to consider when you live in a city region. If this is a problem then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better choice for you.
