Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob
The key fob is a simple way to lock and unlock your vehicle from some distance. It can also activate the panic button on your car which can deter break-ins.
You can fix your fob by following a few simple steps. Check that the battery is brand new. Then, try removing it from the ignition by pressing the lock button three times quickly.
Battery
Change the battery in your key fob is among the easiest fixes. The device uses a small coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) which is typically easily found in general stores and home improvement stores, and some auto parts stores. Make sure you get a new battery -old batteries are usually not useful anymore and can damage the circuit board.
Begin by removing the fob. It might be tight, but with the help of a flat screwdriver you will be able to break the halves. Fit the screwdriver in the seams on both sides of the fob and lift the clips that hold it in place. These are easily broken so be cautious and take your time.
Reassemble the fob after replacing the battery, and test to determine if it does what it is supposed to. If it doesn’t function after pressing the button a few times, make sure the contacts are clean. You could also try it with a spare key fob to determine if the issue is confined to your key. If not it could be another reason why the key fob isn’t working. It could be due to a worn-out button, for instance. This would only cause the button to work a few times but not continuously.
Interference
The key fob is powered by a small transmitter that transmits an extremely short-range signal to a device in your car. Its goal is to enable your car to recognize the fob, and open its doors when you approach it and also start when you press the ignition button in.
The problem is that interference can sometimes interfere with this communication. For example, if you have your second-generation Apple Pencil charged while you’re holding the fob, it can prevent you from unlocking the car (via iGeneration).
Other electronic devices that operate on the same frequency may also interfere with the fob’s signal. The Keylab or tire-pressure monitoring devices could be affected. It is even possible that an RF transmitter inside your home may interfere with the fob’s signal although this would be difficult to pinpoint without an examination by a professional.
Your key fob could require reprogramming. The transmitter in your key fob must be recognized by the Mini’s receiver. A unique code is used for each pairing. Fobs need to be reprogrammed after they are disconnected or replaced, either after you buy a new one or in some cases, when the battery is changed. Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual to reprogram a key fob or consult a dealer.
Chip that isn’t working
Modern electronic key fobs provide the convenience and functionality of traditional manual keys, but they are also susceptible to damage. A defective chip is one of the most frequent issues that can prevent your key fob from operating properly. It is usually a simple fix.
If your car key fob doesn’t seem to start up, it could be an indication of a malfunctioning chip. The problem can usually be repaired by replacing the battery, that is inexpensive and simple to find at a hardware store or big-box retailer. Make sure to purchase the right replacement battery compatible with your specific model of vehicle to avoid any further problems.
It is also important to ensure that the fob is not exposed to soapy or water residue. Water can cause corrosion and disrupt the circuitry. If this is the case you’ll have to clean the board with isopropyl and electronic cleaner prior to installing a new battery.
When the old battery is replaced, it’s an excellent idea to test the fob’s function before driving the vehicle. Utilizing a voltmeter, examine the voltage of the new battery to determine if it is at an acceptable level. If not, you might need to replace the whole remote chip. A qualified dealer technician can assist in determining the best solution for you vehicle.
