Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons trinkets, tools for gathering and weapons to give an added bonus or extra effect while the equipment is in use. They can be obtained by crafting, purchased from vendors or at the trading post or looted as rewards. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Upgrade components are divided into two categories: universal and type restricted. Universal upgrades, such as gemstones, are able to be placed in any equipment. Type-restricted improvements, like inscriptions, have to be installed on specific types of equipment to unlock their bonuses.
Some upgrade components are only recoverable by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool. Ascended armor and legendary gear could contain upgrade components that can only be retrieved with an Black or Ascended Salvage Kit. Upgrades that have already been inserted into an item can’t be exchanged for an upgrade of the same kind. Glyphs can be swapped easily between collecting tools.
Glyphs could be replaced by other glyphs. Any upgraded item will show the original upgrade as well as the new one when hovering over it. Inscriptions can be added with their own names to the item they modify, and is visible by right-clicking on an upgraded weapon or piece of gear.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to provide additional text features. They can be based on icons or other symbols that are visually related to the concept. However they can also represent abstract concepts. Glyphs are defined by Unicode which assigns a specific code to each symbol and allows them to be referenced in different fonts. Some glyphs come in multiple forms, such as swashes and small caps. Some have only one form, such as the capital letter A. The Glyphs Panel comes with an option to search that allows you to filter by a glyph’s name, CID or GID or Unicode value. You can also use the context menu to create a brand new glyph or edit the set of glyphs.
The context menu of the Glyphs Panel lets you select a font that will be used for glyphs of the set. You can also opt to remember a particular font when adding an glyph. The Glyphs Panel displays the font selection for glyphs that are associated with more than one font.
The glyph metrics of a font influence the way text is laid out. A glyph, as an example could have an overall width which is the length it takes to get to the end of the font. The glyph might also have side bearings, which are white spaces on the left and right sides of a font. These side bearings are sometimes called kerning, and they affect how the glyph is displayed in the document.
Glyphs can be upgraded by visiting a Glyph Upgrade Altar, which is located in the Nightmare Dungeons. Each Nightmare Dungeon has a specific amount of time to be completed, following which the Glyph Upgrade altar will be revealed. The Glyph Upgrade altar lets players to spend their Glyph XP earned from running the dungeon. It also increases the number of all the Paragon Board nodes within its radius.
The hero can add the stat bonuses from each glyph to increase his total. These bonuses can help you decide which glyphs to upgrade, and where to place them on the Paragon Board.
