1. Smeg BCC02
Created by Milan-based firm Deep Design, this sleek, compact and striking machine combines the unique retro style of the brand with modern technology. The machine can handle all the steps of the coffee-making procedure, from grinding beans to tamping into a puck and texturing milk to dispensing the right volume.
The machine is also available in black, red and taupe. It can easily fit into any kitchen design. The machine does not come free of flaws however. Many reviewers felt that it was quite expensive for a cup-to- bean maker (and it doesn’t come with an ice cube).
However, there were many glowing reviews of the quality of the coffee and the ease of using this machine. The digital display offers feedback and step-by-step instructions throughout the entire brewing process that will help you improve your coffee every time. The machine will even tell you to alter the size of the grind, if that’s not what you want. It’s almost like having a personal home barista (minus Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, and Elon Musk’s rocket-building skills).
This model is ideal for those who prefer milky drinks. The steam wand can be adjusted upwards and downwards so that it fits most drinking vessels, except Viking drinking horns. We were also awed by the speed and efficiency in which the frothing was done. It produces an excellent, full-flavoured, delicious espresso with a great crema.
The BCC02 is an excellent all-rounder. It’s quiet and efficient, and it provides excellent value for money with its current price of PS499. The only problem is that it doesn’t offer the same level customisation as other bean-to-cup machines that we have tried. It’s got a 15-bar pump rather than the more common 19 bar, which isn’t as good for producing quality espressos. Other than that, this is a fantastic bean-to-cup machine for those who prefer their coffee strong and dark. Click here to view Lavazza’s great deal.
