How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won’t show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren’t firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. how much is an audi key replacement noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I don’t know what to do. I feel like i’ve pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. how much is an audi key replacement is simple to test them to do – just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector’s side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector’s side). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.
The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find, especially when you’re looking at the Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM’s version of this part is an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous problems in your car. It’s an essential component of your Audi’s transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle’s crankshaft is rotating. When this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car’s components.
The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a standard part across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
